The maneuvering of ships from open sea into port has not changed in its fundamentals in two hundred years. However, new technology and the creation of the super tanker have changed many of the specifics. Slesinger, a long time tugboat captain and instructor, has updated that 1986 work of Captain George Reid in this guide. He discusses every aspect of shiphandling with tugs, from complex maneuvers to the mechanics of the boat. He also emphasizes that both the pilot of the ship and the captain of the boat must be skilled in their individual tasks as well as able to work in unison. The book has a large number of explanatory diagrams, photos and sketches. Each chapter is followed by a list of comprehension questions that are answered at the end of the book.
